If you have been reading this blog, you might have noticed a few early posts on the concept of conflict in paintings and photographs (if not, and you are an art lover, click on the tag Contrapunto at the bottom).
The “graphic” conflict here is between the rhythmical, man-made barbs meant to induce suffering to those who want their freedom to expand beyond the wall, and the natural shapes of the running clouds, free from the limits set by the barbed wire, and generally associated with unrestrained freedom of movement.
The main “contrapunto” though is outside: it is the conflict between the free and generally peaceful London that exists outside the fence and the Royal family that resides inside the heavily protected garden. This can be a good illustration to the eternal British class division, that will be there until the Royals are not bid farewell. What never stopped surprising me, is the love for Royals I find in some of my British friends that co-exists with their enmity towards the class system. Come on. The latter is a natural product of the former.
Dear Prince, you can’t fool anyone posing in the hard hat!
PS As they say on the telly: next on this blog – two good artists, Amedeo Modigliani and Leon Kossoff.
